The Community Support Project was initiated seven years ago. It began as the Rice Project when ISG’s sponsor Mr. Thomson Hug wished to help the elderly and needy families in the slum areas by donating rice each month and had requested ISG to undertake the supervision of the distributions. Khun Supattra Kaewchansilp and members/friends of ISGF visited various “chumchon” (village) referred by the DPW (Department of Social Welfare) and delivered the rice during such visits. It was noted that the elderly had many other needs besides rice thus the Rice Project developed into the Community Support Project. Other than rice, extra food, clothes, eyeglasses, etc were also given to those in need. Up to now, the project covers 8 DPW offices in the community and each month approximately 1200 bags of 5kg’s of rice are distributed. Further to these, the Community Support members continue to explore new cases referred by the DPW.
In summary, the objectives of the project are as follows:
- to give rice and other support to the poor and elderly people in Bangkok area
- to assist with other basic needs wherever possible such as reading glasses, bedding, towels, clothes, medical products, house repairs and the education of dependent grandchildren
- to assist any community suffering from the effects of a disaster
